Addressing Suicide Among Older People in Europe: A call for targeted interventions and policy reforms

Published on the 2024 World Suicide Prevention Day (10 September), this policy report is a joint collaboration of GAMIAN-Europe and AGE Platform Europe. It provides an in-depth analysis of the specific factors contributing to the mental health challenges faced by older adults, such as loneliness, depression, and socioeconomic hardships. It also draws attention to the differences in suicide rates across European countries, influenced by various social, economic, and health policies.

The report is not just a call to awareness but a call to action. Drawing from successful initiatives across Europe and beyond, it provides evidence-based recommendations for national policymakers. Key proposals include improving healthcare services, increasing funding for mental health programmes, and creating a supportive environment for older adults through legislative reform.
