AGE and the European Women’s Lobby (EWL) seized the opportunity of the International Women’s Day of 8th March to publish the joint paper ‘Improving the situation of older women in the EU in the context of an ageing society and rapidly changing socio-economic environment’ which aims to draw attention on the negative impact the reforms of the social protection and pension systems currently carried out within EU Member States will have on women and their future old age income.
In their joint position paper, AGE and EWL insisted on the need to approach gender equality in a more comprehensive way which takes the whole life span into consideration. Both organisations also called on EU leaders to address gender equality through Europe 2020 and the European Semester policy coordination process. The needs of the most vulnerable population groups – including older women – must be addressed through stronger EU coordination of social protection and employment reforms, in full respect of Europe 2020 objective on inclusive growth for the benefit of all population and age groups.
