Active Retirement Ireland, an AGE Platform Europe member, recently participated in the Global Intergenerational Week event at Dublin City University (DCU). Alison Bough represented both Active Retirement Ireland and AGE Platform Europe, contributing to important discussions on intergenerational fairness and lifelong learning.
The event, hosted by DCU’s Age-Friendly University, highlighted the need for intergenerational dialogue and the importance of ensuring social and economic equity between generations. As a founding member of the Age-Friendly University Global Network, DCU plays a significant role in addressing ageism and promoting inclusivity within higher education.
During her presentation, Alison Bough focused on the upcoming European Commission’s Intergenerational Fairness Strategy. This strategy aims to create a policy framework that ensures fairness between generations, fostering social cohesion and avoiding intergenerational competition.

Her presentation emphasised the importance of lifelong learning, job security, pensions, housing, and access to care as key elements of intergenerational fairness. With the European Union facing significant demographic changes, Bough noted that it is essential to create policies that support all generations and ensure long-term sustainability.
AGE Platform Europe applauds Active Retirement Ireland for its participation in this event and remains committed to advocating for policies that promote intergenerational solidarity across Europe. The discussions at DCU serve as a reminder that intergenerational fairness is not just a matter of social justice, but also vital for economic and political sustainability.
