AGE supports its members’ mobilization for a European Parliament for all ages

As part of its campaign for a European Parliament attentive to the issue of age equality, AGE has launched a call for proposals to support the advocacy work of its (full) members. Five projects have been awarded.

The aim of this call, co-financed by the CERV Programme of the European Union, was to support members in designing and implementing post-election projects liaising with elected Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) to engage them durably on the promotion of age equality at EU level.

Leveraging on the experience gained during the first edition of the programme (Financial Support to AGE Members), the following five proposals have been granted to run activities from July until December 2024 (click on the + sign below to read more on each project):

This project aims to strengthen the commitment of all newly elected Polish MEP and their political parties in working for equality. The project will furthermore support the establishment of an Intergroup for Age Equality in the European Parliament and the proposal for a European Age Equality Strategy as drafted by AGE Platform Europe. These goals will be achieved through a nationwide educational media campaign, including direct (through project staff) and indirect (through representatives of senior communities and organisations, representatives of the young generation, employees of local government units and their aid institutions) reaching MEPs in Poland and leveraging on intergenerational exchanges. The project will produce and broadcast videos, a series of articles and promotional materials on digital portals and in printed periodicals with the support of pro-senior organizations and senior journalists.

With this project, APRe! hopes to contribute to the design of public policies that will improve the lives of people of all ages.

The project is organized into 4 Work Packages: 1) Dissemination and debate sessions on the Manifesto and its contents, aimed at older adults; 2) Meetings with Portuguese MEPs or their representatives; 3) Visit to the European Parliament and AGE Platform Europe; 4) Publication on the themes of the Manifesto, with a focus on the Portuguese reality.

This project envisions a society where all people, no matter their age, have an equal voice and where their needs are taken into account by policy makers. People Behind aims to raise public awareness on age equality and increase the participation of older people in promoting human rights at an EU level. Through a bottom-up approach, the project will engage with 70 older people in sharing ideas, views, opinions and experiences in fighting age-discrimination and defending older people’s rights in the EU. The project will develop participatory meetings with people over 65 years old to listen and write down their needs and their proposals for combatting ageism. These views will inform a social media campaign – containing posters, video, podcast and infographics-, with the aim to inform the public on older people’s rights, but especially to raise awareness of elected MEPs on taking actions in the European Parliament for defending the rights of older people. Through this project People Behind expects on the long term a better understanding of ageism and of the need for age equality in Greece, increased involvement of older people in the decision-making processes as well as the engagement of MEPs in promoting the rights of older people in the EU.

  • Place: Greece
  • Duration: 3 months
  • Requested budget: 15.630EUR

This project draws upon Zivot 90’s expertise in addressing ageing-related matters and in advancing the rights and welfare of older individuals. The close contact with an MEP of the past years, Radka Maxová, offers support in calling upon the newly elected MEPs to set up a series of structured meetings according to their new portfolios. The aim is to find synergy between Zivot90’s long-term work to empower older persons, aligning this work with the Ministry of Labour and Social affairs, and the MEPs. The project intends to 1) work with the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs to draft legislation protecting the rights and well-being of seniors, and to work with the newly elected MEPs after the 2024 elections to screen the national strategy on ageing and measure age discrimination; 2) form a senior advocacy group: a leading a group of older citizens to promote the priorities set out in the EU strategy for equality in old age. The projected impact is to shift the perception of ageing, raise awareness on older people’s rights, and enhance the capacity for participation of older individuals in shaping their lives.

  • Place: Czech Republic
  • Duration: 5 months
  • Requested budget: 15.279EUR
