PRESS RELEASE Brussels, 29 June 2010
EU campaign to raise awareness of passenger rights
AGE welcomes the launch of a campaign to inform EU rail and air passengers on their rights
AGE Platform Europe fully supports the European Commission’s launch of a campaign to raise EU citizens’ awareness of their rights when travelling by rail or air.
Faced with the rapid increase in mobility within the European Union, the EU legislation has been developed to guarantee equal basic rights for all EU passengers, but many citizens were still not aware of those new rights.
In particular, AGE is pleased that a special section on the campaign website is devoted to the most vulnerable passengers, such as the disabled persons and persons with reduced mobility, which should help them to fully enjoy the advantages of EU mobility development, as any other European citizen.
“Many older people are reluctant to use public transport because they have mobility problems and are afraid that they won’t be able to manage in the airport or the train station. We hope that with this campaign, they will be more aware of their right to get assistance whenever they need it and that they will feel more confident to travel by air or rail across the European Union, said Anne-Sophie parent, Director of AGE Platform Europe.
