The Cyprus Third Age Observatory met with the Cyprus Minister of Education, Sports and Youth to discuss actions to bridge the generation gap and combat ageism. During the meeting, AGE Cyprus member presented a detailed memorandum suggesting policies and ways forward.

A range of action proposals were discussed with the Cyprus Minister Mrs Athena Michaelidou to address age discrimination, mainly through education, communication (campaigns), legislation, and digital technologies. The policies proposed by The Cyprus Third Age Observatory – outlined in its ‘Memorandum on combating ageism and bridging the generation gap’ – aims to:

  1. Educate children about the value and contribution of all age groups;
  2. Fight ageism at its root, tackling stereotypes and prejudices;
  3. Promote understanding and cooperation between generations to strengthen social cohesion.

The Observatory also informed the Minister about the European project Mentoring Across Borders, in which AGE is a partner. The project aims at developing, testing and validating an intergenerational, cross-border mentoring programme bringing together older, experienced people (mentors, aged 50+) and young mentees (aged 18-30) at risk of marginalization.
