Dance classes to address dementia in Germany

WirTanzenWieder-GdPractice

„Wir tanzen wider” („Wir dance again”) is a German-wide initiative aiming to improve the lives of people living with dementia through dance classes. The idea is to offer them a place to meet, exchange and have fun together while at the same time improving their physical and mental conditions.

The specificity of this initiative is that classes are given in a number of dance schools throughout the country (and not in older people’s homes or community halls). A 90-minute afternoon dance session is organized every month for people with dementia, seniors and families. People with walking aids, walking frames or wheelchairs are welcome.

Dance classes contribute to the social inclusion and participation of dementia sufferers and can help prevent memory problems. Together with their families they experience happy moments and discover new things.
