EU Quarterly Review reveals improved employment for older people, but youth unemployment remains a challenge

The Commission has released its quarterly review of the employment and social situation in the EU. The main finding is that while household incomes are gradually increasing and the labour market recovering, long-term unemployment is still increasing and the income of poor households has not increased. The review also points to the challenges for women, whose labour prospects are improving at a slower pace as for men.

Growth in employment comes mostly from temporary and part-time jobs. Regarding older workers, the review notes that their employment levels are going up steadily since 2009. However, employment of people between 55 and 64 still stands at roughly 50%, compared with 76% for ‘prime age’ workers.
