European Disability Forum asks for amendments to new EU cross-border regulation

The European Disability Forum (EDF) expresses its deep concern about a new EU regulation proposed last May to protect the rights of vulnerable adults in cross-border situations. This regulation is currently under negotiation.

The proposals put forward by the European commissoin cover adults who move within the EU and who, for reason of impairment or insufficiency of their personal faculties, are not in a position to protect their own interests. These can be people that have assets or estates in another country, who are seeking medical care abroad, or who relocate in another EU Member State.

While EDF recognises the importance of legislation in that area, they call on the European Parliament and Council of the EU to amend some provisions of the proposed Regulation to avoid human rights violations against persons with disabilities and older people.
