In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic had a tragic impact on care homes residents in many EU countries. As of 26 January, globally 41% of COVID-19 related fatalities occurred in care homes. In countries like in France, Belgium, Sweden or Spain, one out of twenty care home residents died as a result of COVID-19. Those figures are largely due to problems that were already underlying before the pandemic, namely breaches of human rights, understaffing and a lack of safety protocols.
In order to identify the gaps and make sure lessons will be drawn, we joined forces with the European Disability Forum (EDF) and the European Public Service Union (EPSU) to call upon the European Parliament to launch an investigation into COVID-19 mismanagement in the long-term care sector.
As a follow-up to our request, we are organizing jointly with EDF and EPSU an event at the European Parliamant on COVID-19 and residential care.
