Liz_conference_AgeingWell_May2017 In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, Dr. Elizabeth Mestheneos took part last May in TEDx talks in Thessaloniki, Greece. TEDx – where x stands for ‘independently organized’ – is a program of local events that bring together people and experts from different areas of expertise, professional and life experience to spark deep discussion and connection. Part of these local events TEDx talks in Thessaloniki aimed at reaching out to younger adults 25-40 addressing a wide range of issues from the political use of language, to palaeontology and its reflections on world changes and human rights.

In her talk Dr. Mestheneos reflected on what young people can do to ensure that they remain relevant in the workplace, active in family’s life and happy as they age. Considering that one quarter of life expectancy is linked to genetics and three thirds to life style (food, physical activities, friendship), people have key responsibility in their ageing process. Some of the main actions that can help you contribute to improving it are: Broaden your horizons; Social Participation; Exercise and movement; Fun and creativity; Quality diet and; Be actively useful.

Dr. Mestheneos also focused on the role of public authorities in accommodating the needs, challenges and unique characteristics of ageing populations, namely: by: Creating accessible, inclusive, green facilities; Enhancing legal action against ageism; Allowing/encouraging older people to work; and Creating opportunities for new skills and hobbies.
