“Ageing should not be considered a period of weakness but a phase of life full of opportunities, creativity, and prosperity,” stated Andreas Kettis, Head of the European Parliament’s Office in Cyprus, during the A Europe for All Ages conference. The event was co-organised by AGE Member Cyprus Third Age Observatory.
Held on 10 January 2025 at the Journalists’ Centre in Nicosia, the conference was supported by President Christodoulides of Cyprus.
The conference brought together influential stakeholders to discuss age-related issues and promote positive ageing initiatives. It was co-organised by our member, the Cyprus Third Age Observatory, the European Parliament Office in Cyprus, and the Cyprus National Bioethics Committee. The event welcomed state officials from Cyprus, including the Minister of the Interior, the Deputy Minister of Social Welfare, representatives from the Ministries of Labour and Health, MPs, MEPs, Commissioners for Equality and Development of Mountain Communities, health professionals, and a representative of the Mayor of Nicosia.
Key Topics and Discussions
During the four-hour workshop, participants addressed critical themes such as:
- Creating Age-Friendly Cities: Designing urban spaces to meet the needs of older citizens.
- The “Silver” Economy: Leveraging the economic potential of an ageing population.
- Sustainability Across Generations: Shaping a future that is inclusive of all age groups.
The discussions also tackled pressing issues, including ageism, abuse, economic exploitation, and social isolation of older people. Participants emphasised the need for prevention programmes and strong support structures. Amid these challenges, the workshop highlighted the positive prospects of ageing, emphasising that older people can play an active role in social and economic life.
