Join WHO global campaign against ageism

Older Persons International Day-banner October 1 is the United Nations International Day of Older Persons. The theme for this year’s day is “Take A Stand Against Ageism”. Ageism, the stereotyping and discrimination against people on the basis of age, is a serious social prejudice with significant consequences for older people.

In May 2016, the World Health Assembly, the decision-making body of World Health Organization (WHO), adopted a resolution on the Global strategy and action plan on ageing and health calling for the development, in cooperation with other partners, of a global campaign to combat ageism. This month, WHO encourages everyone to raise awareness and understanding about ageism and to take a stand against it.

You can take part by:

  • Participating in our Facebook Live Q&A on September 30th at 4pm (CEST) on the WHO Facebook page. Questions can be submitted in advance to healthyageing@who.int with the subject line “Facebook Live”.
  • Calling for messages of support from your political leadership
    • Call for local, regional, and national commitment to Healthy Ageing and the implementation of the Global strategy and action plan on ageing and health
  • Taking the Ageing Attitudes Quiz to test your own attitudes about ageing and encouraging others to do the same (quiz will be available in English, French, Spanish, and Japanese by Sep 30)
