New Patient Safety Package highlights progress and challenges

patient safetyHow the EU is dealing with patient safety and what remains to improve in that area is the subject of the patient safety package released by the European Commission on 19 June.

The package sheds light on the significant progress made by the European Commission and EU member states, namely in the reporting of adverse effects, but also stresses that progress is still needed on patient empowerment and training of healthcare professionals.

Prior to the publication of this package, a public consultation was launched from December 2013 and February 2014, in which AGE took part. In our contribution we called for the concept of patient safety to include the issue of the quality of care and be extended to all phases of patient care pathways.
