Within a large coalition of NGOs, AGE Platform Europe issued a joint press release and statement to call on the German Federal Government to stop blocking the Equal Treatment Directive and work towards a consistent level of protection against discrimination in Europe.
The directive, proposed by the European Commission in 2008 but still blocked at the Council, aims to implement the principle of equal treatment between persons irrespective of religion or belief, disability, age or sexual orientation beyond employment.
The signatories appeal to the German federal government:
- To remove its fundamental opposition to the draft directive,
- To re-enter into negotiations,
- To work together with its EU partners, the European Commission, and the European Parliament on strong protection against discrimination in all fields of life that applies to all people across Europe, and
- To enter into a dialogue with the signatories as soon as possible.
