Nomination of new EU Commission President
Non-discrimination, civil dialogue, sustainable future and intergenerational cooperation are critical priorities that the future European Commission really needs to focus on! Older people organisation across Europe urge Commission President candidate.
In view of the statement of the candidate for the Presidency of the European Commission, Dr Ursula von der Leyen, and the vote of the European Parliament Plenary on her appointment, AGE Platform Europe has addressed on an open letter to the candidate, calling for a Europe for all ages and intergenerational exchange as a tool to tackle the growing polarisation in the EU.
Based on the Final Declaration of the 2019 AGE General Assembly and AGE’s Manifesto for the European elections, we ask the future European Commission to commit to:
- strengthening legal protection against non-discrimination;
- improving civil dialogue, developing a permanent consultation process with civil society and social partners;
- ensuring an environmentally and socially sustainable future through a strong committment to the the European Pillar of Social Rights and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs);
- enhancing intergenerational dialogue and cooperation.
We really believe that those priorities are essential and will require EU leaders’ full attention in the coming years if we want to guarantee a future for all generations in our ageing Europe.
