“In my first 100 days in office, I will put forward legislation for a coordinated European approach on the human and ethical implications of Artificial Intelligence. This should also look at how we can use big data for innovations that create wealth for our societies and our businesses.”

Ursula von der Leyen – Political Guidelines for the next European Commission

As Ursula von der Leyen promised in July 2019 when she was elected President, the European Commission has released a White Paper on Artificial Intelligence as the first milestone of a European approach on this key issue. The document builds on the work done by the High Level Group on Artificial Intelligence and opens up a period of consultation with all relevant stakeholders.

Considering our strong experience in relation to new technologies, we decided to contribute to the open consultation to provide the perspective of older persons in relation to artificial intelligence. Our contribution (+ Addendum) focuses on the part dedicated to fundamental rights and highlights mainly three challenges: the digital exclusion, the increased use of new technologies in the care sector and ageism as a clear risk factor.

Based on the results of the consultation, the European Commission will propose a regulatory framework to better protect fundamental rights in the context of artificial intelligence.
