Medicines: EU-wide survey reveals persisting shortage

The European Association of Hospital Pharmacists (EAHP) conducted a survey in 2018 that added to the evidence on medicines shortage in European hospitals. The survey covered 38 European countries and amassed a total number of 1,666 responses. The results underline that medicines shortages remain a major problem for patients and pharmacists in European hospitals. Over the past four years the problems caused by shortages for European patients have become increasingly alarming. Patient care delays were reported by more than half of the survey respondents. Moreover, the number of hospital pharmacists who regard shortages as an issue in terms of delivering the best care to patients has seen a significant increase. 91.8% of respondents are now facing problems in their hospital pharmacy due to medicines shortages compared to 86.2% in 2014.
