The EU agrees on new rules to fight online fraud

In view of the increasing fraud with credit card or online payments, European leaders have reached an agreement on a provisional directive to combat online crime offences. The draft text updates the existing rules in order to enhance safety, namely in facilitating the prosecution of offenders and in better informing the victims of their rights and the citizens on how to protect themselves from online fraud.

The most vulnerable older people may be ‘easy victims’ for online offenders. Strengthening cybersecurity is of major concern to prevent financial elder abuse and promote equal participation in old age. This is an issue AGE has been promoting as an active member of the Financial Services User Group of the European Commisison and of the Euro Retail Payment Board of the European Central Bank.
